Uncultivated Rabbits Presents: Shihan

Uncultivated Rabbits are bringing SHIHAN to UC Irvine - Wednesday, April 14th, at ELH 100 (Engineering Lecture Hall).

Uncultivated Rabbits is the only spoken word organization at UC Irvine. Their goal is to facilitate an emergent student voice by creating a nurturing space where students can express and empower themselves through the written and spoken word.

Performance By: Shihan

Shihan is a national poetry slam champion, 3-time finalist, and has been featured on all six seasons of HBO's Def Poetry Jam. He met success when signed to MCA Records as an artist/writer. He wrote for the NBA Jam Session series, the theme for Reebok's 'Blacktop' Campaign, the popular Schoolhouse Rock series, as well as co-writing for MTV's Rock the Vote campaign 'Tic Toc'.

A critically acclaimed poet, he has been reviewed positively by the LA Times, The Baltimore Sun, and The Washington Post, amongst others. He can be seen co-hosting Da Poetry Lounge in Hollywood, the nation's largest open mic.

Reigniting The Dream Through Activism

Honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the event entitled “Reigniting the Dream” will kick off on Thursday, January 21st, with on-stage performances from nationally-recognized artists Ise Lyfe, One Be Lo, Uncultivated Rabbits, and Ladies Room at the Crystal Cove Auditorium at 6 pm. The performances will follow with the March of Dreams and an en masse drum circle and cultural dance celebration on Ring Road at 8 pm, where all are welcome to join. On Friday, January 22nd, the celebration will continue as we “Live the Dream” at the flagpoles at noon, with various performances by dance crews and bands, as well as food sold by the traveling gourmets of Kogi Truck.

If your group includes a drumming or cultural dancing group of any kind, we are inviting your group to participate in the commencement of the drumming. And of course, everyone is welcome to bring their own preferred percussive instruments to join the celebration.

Project V.O.I.C.E. (Vocal Outreach Into Creative Expression) is a national movement that celebrates and inspires youth self-expression through Spoken Word Poetry. Conceived in 2004 by Sarah Kay, Project V.O.I.C.E. encourages young people to engage with the world around them and use Spoken Word Poetry as an instrument through which they can explore and better understand their culture, their society, and ultimately themselves. Project V.O.I.C.E. brings together performance, writing, and a supportive environment to inspire youth to recognize that their views are significant, valid, and necessary.

Sarah Kay, the founder and director of Project V.O.I.C.E. is a Spoken Word Poet who grew up in New York City and began performing her poetry when she was only fourteen years old. Sarah was featured on the sixth season of the television series Russel Simmons presents HBO Def Poetry Jam, where she performed her poem "Hands." She has performed side by side with Spoken Word superstars like Beau Sia, Taylor Mali, Buddy Wakefield, and many others. In 2004, Sarah founded Project VOICE to encourage teenagers toward creative self-expression through Spoken Word workshops.

Phil Kaye, Project V.O.I.C.E.'s co-director, is from Southern California, and has been writing and performing spoken word poetry since he was seventeen years old. Phil has shared the stage with such Spoken Word legends as Anis Mojgani, Derrick Brown, and Amir Sulaiman. Phil is the creator of "Beyond Color" – a SoCal lecture series that explores the deep roots of racism and marginalization in modern society. Phil is currently the Head Coordinator of a program called Space in Prison for the Arts and Creative Expression (S.P.A.C.E.), and sets up arts workshops in the Rhode Island Prison System.
